Dog Urine Grass Burn & Lawn Repair
Dog Urine Grass Burn & Lawn Repair - the Ph or acidity of dog urine can cause grass burn on your lawn, or those unsightly brown spots dotted here and there amongst the otherwise lush green grass.
The good news is that not all dog urine causes grass burn, and for those dogs that do cause it, there are products to help repair your lawn, maintain the grass, and to control the Ph or acidity of the dog in question!
In general, most female dogs have a higher acidity level and are most likely to produce urine that will cause a problem as the sun beats on your lawn and over the various spots that the female has peed. That however, is not to say that a male can't also cause burn with it's urine. Many males also cause burn, and again in general, it often just depends on the dog's system or metabolism.
Fortunately there are solutions, other than just resigning yourself to a polka dot lawn for the next 10-15 years!! The solutions break into three categories or approaches:
1) Repair of the Brown Spots; 2) Natural supplements to change the Ph or acidity of the dog urine; 3) Training of your dog to pee on, or around, one object consistently, thus minimizing the damage to the rest of the lawn.
Repair of the Brown Spots We like a product called Lawn Spot Away, which uses a non-toxic green coloring agent to help make your brown spot look better immediately, as well as natural enzymes that speed the breakdown of dog urine and help rejuvenate your area so that the grass grows back much faster.
Natural Supplements Consider Grass Saver Dog Biscuits or Green-UM tablets or treats with this approach. Both brands are all natural and made by highly respected pet nutrition companies (NaturVet and Mark & Chappell). These products simply alter the urine acidity level so that grass burn is minimized or eliminated, depending on the dog. These supplements are not harmful and also contain added vitamins and minerals.
Spot Training Another solution, perhaps even in combination with the above two, is to train your dog to consistently pee in a certain area or on a particular object. In this way, the potential damage to your lawn is minimized or controlled within a certain area. For example, you might make a square gravel area in your yard where your dog is trained to pee, or you might purchase a "target" to train your dog to pee on, such as the Dog Fire Hydrant or the Dog Pee Post.
In conclusion, there is hope for your lawn! If you are a new dog or puppy owner, there may not be anything to worry about, and we suggest to wait and see. If you already know that you have a problem, use one or all of the above approaches for a lush green lawn!
