Potty Training Dogs
Potty Training Dogs - this article deals with potty training small breed dogs, elderly, physically challenged or housebound dogs. For larger breeds or more robust puppies, visit our articles titled House Training a Dog or Puppy House Training.
First, it is a fallacy or misconception that all dogs can go outside at all times. Elderly or physically challenged dogs may find going outside extremely difficult or stressful. The Chihuahua or Yorkie, with only 3-10 lbs of body weight, could quickly freeze in most northern winter climates. Sometimes, it is the owner that is challenged or becomes incapable of going outside, and unfortunately, the dog becomes housebound as a result.
Solutions for Potty Training Dogs - there are a number of products currently available for indoor potty training of dogs and there seems to be a rise in the introduction of new products to address this need and problem. Generally, potty training products fall into four categories:
1) A box or tray for containing the dog's waste; 2) An absorbent litter or material for soaking up the liquid; 3) Aids for training the dog to use the indoor potty area; 4) Odor control of the indoor potty.
For each of these categories, the products we like and have used are briefed below with links for additional information. As we become aware of new product introductions that we like and have tried, we will update this article.
Puppy
Go Potty Litter Box
- made specially for small to medium size dogs. Large
enough to turn around several times before the business begins! Easy access for
the smallest dogs.
Puppy Go Potty Litter - also made specially for dogs. Highly absorbent cellulose (wood pulp) pebbles provide the ideal paw feeling for doing the business. These are pebble or small rock size as most dogs will refuse to stand in cat litter due to a sinking feeling which they do not like (similar to quicksand). The Puppy Go Potty dog litter is also scented with a pheromone to attract the dog and assist in training.
Economy Puppy Training Pads - some prefer to use puppy training pads within the litter box. They are also highly absorbent and scented to attract the puppy or dog. We suggest the economy puppy training pads, since you will use quite a few, but many people prefer the Little Stinker Puppy Pads.
Puppy Training Pad Holder - helps prevent tearing or shredding of pads and provides a secure anchor to keep pads in place. The pad holder is easy to use and discourages pets from playing and dragging training pads.
Bitter Apple Taste Deterrent - if your puppy develops the annoying habit of dragging his pee pad around the house, or starts chewing on things you don't want him to, spray with Bitter Apple, a natural taste deterrent.
Puppy Trainer Housebreaking Aid - a pheromone that is sprayed on the area that you would like your dog to do his business. The dog litter and puppy pads are already scented but, a little extra won't hurt in the early training process.
Potty Odor Control - mist the litter box daily with a product called Nok-Out and no one will ever know that your dog does his business indoors. It completely neutralizes the ammonia within the dog urine, is non-toxic and bio-degradable. (Also excellent for cat litter boxes.)
